Adolescence is a bitch. Add to it the experience of being an immigrant struggling to learn the language and culture of a new country and it's even harder to bear. Director So Yong Kim examines this difficult situation from the perspective of Aimie (Jiseon Kim), a Korean teen living with her mom (Bokja Kim) in Canada. Aimie, clad in a huge parka, trudges through the frozen landscape with an air of deep resignation, but she brightens considerably whenever Tran (Taegu Andy Kang) comes around. At the same time, Aimie is confused by Tran, who treats her like one of the guys while reminding her, not so subtly, of his surging hormones. As Aimie gradually falls in love, she feels Tran pull away, attracted as he is by the more Westernized and outgoing Korean girls in their peer circle. In Between Days moves slowly--too slowly sometimes--as Aimie battles her angst. By turns elated, sullen, and depressed, she embodies the typical teenager in love, but there is another dimension to her story--a father who has abandoned his daughter just when she may have needed him the most. Kim's nuanced portrayal of Aimie is marked more by silences than by words, and it is in this performance that the film finds its emotional resonance. (Caroline Palmer)
