Though IMAX 3D may be the ideal format for underwater photography, this 42-minute nature doc, narrated by a tiny sea turtle, only hints at the medium’s jaw-dropping potential. Ironically, it's not the titular predator that steals the show, but a school of miniscule fish that devours the massive screen, then sweeps away like a matador's cape. That the sharks appear marginalized in Sharks is probably because the movie has nothing new or exciting to say about them. These aren’t the bloodthirsty maneaters of Hollywood mythology--check. They serve a very specific place in their ecosystem--gotcha. Despite its state-of-the-art presentation, this is basically the same nature doc that many of us will remember from elementary school filmstrips. It's enough to make one wonder how long it’ll take for a Kubrickian visionary to discard the pretenses of education and activism and just let this sensory juggernaut rip. (John Behling)
