An IMAX movie with genuine emotions instead of precipitous fly-overs? Indeed, this stately tour of a world ruled by pachyderms is more compelling than the bulk of its big-big-screen peers. Mildly hokey narration by a grizzled veteran with a broken tusk leads us into and then alongside an elephant family, led by a strong matriarch, which endures many of the familiar milestones of human life without appearing too anthropomorphic. The Australian production team captured many rare and even unseen elephant behaviors, including an extraordinary scene of trunk-nuzzling compassion around the body of a dead calf. And the visual style is stunning, especially given the IMAX camera's three-minute maximum shot length; you've never seen so many close-up variations on the color gray. (Phil Anderson)
