Mercies May spent years as the go-to visionary for a handful of smaller acts like Literati and Christopher David Hanson Band. But that doesn’t mean the Strange and Distant Pictures director/photographer wasn’t doing some of the best, edgiest behind-the-lens work in the Twin Cities. Just watch Ecid’s “Breaking Up with Death” to see how he brings effusive humor to the screen, complementing the rapper’s verses perfectly. Focusing mainly on narratives, May creates small, temporal worlds that only exist within the runtime of the song, making the video a truly unique and distinct piece of art. Though his big break came early this year when he helmed P.O.S’ video for “Lanes,” his work on Literati’s “Swan Song” was perhaps the most disciplined video work to come out of Minnesota in 2016 — a master stroke from a director who is only just now making his skills apparent to the scene at large.
